Schynige Platte

Schynige Platte
Top of Swiss Tradition at 2076 m above sea level.
On its 7.255 km journey from Wilderswil to the Schynige Platte, the cogwheel railroad climbs 1420 meters in altitude. Along the way, the diversity of nature is impressive: forests, alpine meadows and the magnificent view of the famous landscapes of the Bernese Oberland with Lakes Thun and Brienz. Further up, the foothills of the Alps give way to a clear view of the gleaming white triumvirate of the Bernese Alps. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lie directly opposite. The change of scenery after passing through the "Grätli Tunnel" (5.6 km) is unique. The Schynige Platte Railway opened for operation on June 14, 1893. The railroad has been running electrically since 1914, with a large proportion of the carriages and locomotives coming from old Wengernalp Railway stock. The Schynige Platte Railway is therefore also a testimony to the history of Jungfrau Railways.
